I Didn’t Expect This at My First Syrian Wedding

Have you ever witnessed a moment so full of culture, joy, and energy that it completely reshaped how you see celebration?

I did.

I recently went to my assistant Lara’s wedding, my first traditional Syrian wedding, and it was absolutely unforgettable. Lara and her husband Rami are both Syrian, and from the moment they stepped into the room, the energy was electric. They came out with traditional drums, dancing, and a grand entrance that lit the place up.

Then out of nowhere, Arab Elvis Presley starts singing off the dome. I had no idea what he was saying, but the entire room came alive. It was beautiful, it was perfect, and it was so much fun.

More than anything, it reminded me how powerful it is to be fully present in moments like this, to pause the grind and just soak it all in.

What I Learned About Community

Sitting there, watching families from different generations dance together, seeing neighbors who’d become family, I couldn’t help but reflect on what makes a community truly special.

Connection isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s everything.

The way Lara’s family welcomed everyone, how strangers became friends on the dance floor, the natural way different cultures blended together. It reminded me why I love living and working in Philadelphia so much.

This City Gets It

Philadelphia has always been a city of neighborhoods, each with its own cultural heartbeat. In South Philly, you’ll find Italian families who’ve lived on the same block for four generations. In Northern Liberties, young professionals are creating new traditions while honoring the area’s history. In West Philadelphia, the energy reminds me of that wedding. It’s vibrant, authentic, and full of life.

What struck me most at the celebration was how naturally different backgrounds came together. Syrian traditions, guests learning new dances, everyone finding their rhythm. That’s Philadelphia in a nutshell! It’s not about fitting into a mold; it’s about finding where your story connects with everyone else’s.

Lesson from the Dance Floor

Watching that celebration taught me a few things about what really matters:

  • Energy is everything. You can feel it when you walk into a room or a neighborhood. Are people talking to each other? Do you hear laughter? Is there life happening?
  • Traditions create bonds. Whether it’s the Italian Market Festival, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, or a backyard barbecue in Fishtown, places that celebrate who they tend to be, places where people genuinely care about each other.
  • Everyone belongs somewhere. The best communities make newcomers feel welcome. They don’t just tolerate differences, they celebrate them.

The Power of Belonging

Watching Lara and Rami surrounded by their community reminded me of something profound: we’re all looking for our people, our place, our corner of the world where we can just be ourselves.

In a city like Philadelphia, with all its diversity and character, that search always leads somewhere beautiful. Maybe it’s discovering the perfect coffee shop in Graduate Hospital where the barista knows your order. Maybe it’s finding that one block in Kensington where kids still play outside and neighbors actually know each other’s names. Maybe it’s stumbling into a community garden in Northern Liberties and realizing you’ve found your Sunday morning routine.

What Makes Philadelphia Special

This city has something magical! The ability to make anyone feel like they could belong here. Families building new lives alongside with families who’ve been here for decades. Graduate students from around the world discovering what makes Philly special. Artists and entrepreneurs in neighborhoods creating something entirely new while respecting what came before.

It’s not perfect, but it’s real. And real is rare these days.

A Personal Note

I am grateful I got to be part of Lara and Rami’s special day. Congratulations to Lara and Rami, wishing you a lifetime of love and joy.

But more than that, I’m grateful for what that celebration reminded me about this city I call home. Every day, I get to witness families finding their place in Philadelphia’s incredible tapestry of communities. Whether someone’s looking for their first apartment in University City, a family considering the suburbs, or anyone who wants to be part of this city’s ongoing story, the magic happens when you stop looking for the perfect place and start looking for your people.

Whatever brings you joy, whatever makes you feel connected, whatever helps you find your people, lean into it. Life’s too short for anything else.
